Over the past sixteen years one of the challenges for a very busy mom with a car full of kids and five library cards was to make it home with wise choices and stay on track with our studies. At a glance we are able to see the gaps, fill in the gaps, keep perspective on who has read what (a must for high school transcripts), and find a variety of books to keep everyone interested. That is quite a challenge when the kids range in ability from emergent reader to high schooler! Timeline of Classics provides a meaningful way to accomplish all of those things.

Welcome to the most-used resource in our schoolroom…our chronological book list!

June 8, 2012

Friday Morning – 11:00 am

Cultivating Character in A Sedated Culture: A Great Awakening: The Mind, Media, and Moral Imagination – We are entering a new Dark Age—one more subtle, more insidious. A culture sedated by sounds and images that deaden our senses and rob us of who we are created to be. “We are amusing ourselves to death.”  Join Mark as he exposes the damaging effects that certain kinds of media, electronic games, and literature, have on the brain, the conscience, the imagination, and a child’s moral and spiritual development. Most importantly, he will introduce a substitute that possesses timeless principles that can redeem, transform, and cultivate a hope that never disappoints.

Friday Afternoon  – 1:00 pm

A Passionate Pursuit of Excellence!  – Based on the life of Ehud the Benjamite, Mark will unveil the unique strategy that God and his parents used to prepare him to become a skilled and strategic warrior, confident leader, and a skillful entrepreneur.  In this seminar we will look at the assessment of a child’s natural abilities and the instructive insights that are necessary to cultivate in each child, teen, and passionate pursuit of excellence in every area of life. This seminar promises to be an eye opener for all ages—in more ways than you expect; but in a way you will never forget! If time allows we will go behind the scenes to see what inspired and motivated the great minds of Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Einstein, Edison, and the more modern creativity of Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and the Beatles. They all had something in common–something available to all

Friday Night Keynote -  7:00 pm Open and FREE to the Public! Bring a friend!

The Strong-Willed Parent  - One only has to listen to discover the heart of a child. Our goal as parents and teachers is to reach the heart, rather than simply realign behavior.  Too often, we depend on rules as the primary enforcer of behavior. Rules can change behavior, but they can’t change the heart. When parents and teachers begin to discern the difference between character flaws and purposeful disobedience, they will implement a gentler approach to reaching and understanding their children.  As a result, children will more willingly admit their faults and seek help from those they love. Children need to hear the beating of our hearts rather than the beating of our voices.  Join Mark as he relates his experience as a shepherd and the important lesson that you don’t become a shepherd just because you own sheep.

Saturday Morning Keynote – 11:00 am

Let Go or I’ll Break Your Leg  - Resolved Conflicts and Restored Relationships) Based on the manipulative life of Jacob, his rival relationship with his brother, the lack of relationship between his mother and father, and his constant marital conflicts, the stage is set for a life of deception—self-deception. Believing that holding on to a better inheritance, more children, a better wife, and a better job, will bring fulfillment, Jacob learns the hard way that he was holding on to all the wrong things in life. Join our journey with Jacob as we find unconditional acceptance in all the right places; but be prepared to fight because once you’ve found what you are looking for, you will need to hold on for your life! This seminar is based on Mark’s two years of research for his thesis and will cover sibling rivalry, marital conflict, parenting insights, and much more.

Saturday Final Workshop – 1:00 pm

Transforming Marriages & Parenting with Biblical Insight – Life transforming highlights from Mark’s recent travels through the land of Israel. Come and join Mark as he brings life transforming parallels and insights for marriages and parenting; as he reveals the truth behind the miracles at the pool of Salaam and Pool of Bethesda. This is one seminar you won’t want to miss!

Introducing the US Naval Sea Cadets to CHEC 2012

CHEC is so excited to welcome Dana Robinson who will represent the US Naval Sea Cadets, Yorktown Division Youth Program sponsored by US Navy!

Since 1958 the Naval Sea Cadet Corps has been committed to providing American youth with a drug and alcohol free environment to foster their leadership abilities, broaden their horizons through hands-on training and guide them to becoming mature young adults.

Sea Cadet organizations exist in most of the maritime nations of the world. Recognizing the value of these organizations in educating youth in maritime matters, the Department of the Navy requested the Navy League of the United States to establish a similar program for American youth. The Navy League agreed to do so and formally established the Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) and Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC) in 1958. Recognizing the importance and benefits of the NSCC, Congress on September 10, 1962 federally incorporated the Naval Sea Cadet Corps under Public Law 87-655 (36 USC 1541).

Today, the NSCC has formed partnerships with organizations such as the Foundation for Teaching Economics and the Flying Midshipman Association to offer cadets broader opportunities in areas of leadership and aviation. The NSCC also took an active part in the creation of the International Sea Cadet Association (ISCA). The ISCA is an association of Sea Cadet Corps’ from around the world, whose main objective is to facilitate exchanges of cadets between member countries.

Welcome CollegePlus!

Welcome to College Plus! College Plus is an educational coaching organization enabling the student to attain a regionally accredited Bachelor’s Degree.  Denis Jacob and Emily King will be our reps at 2012 CHEC.

CollegePlus is a revolutionary Christian based distance learning program helping students earn their fully accredited bachelor’s degree in a fraction of the time and cost of the traditional university system.

CollegePlus is an innovative blend of study skills courses, CLEP and other exams, on campus courses, and online classes with one-on-one coaching to bring a student’s long-term vision and academics together in harmony.

Flexible study gives students the opportunity to complete their degrees while gaining invaluable experience in their chosen career field through internships and work-study programs. This flexibility also allows CollegePlus students to take ownership of their education by tailoring their studies to their passions, interests, and abilities.

Instead of fitting into a semester schedule, students study whenever it is convenient for them as they balance college, work, and ministry responsibilities. Despite this freedom, CollegePlus students typically finish their fully accredited degrees in two years or less.

CollegePlus students also focus on developing a biblical worldview as they complete their degrees. They are challenged to develop a foundational worldview perspective through reading and listening to works from Doug Phillips, Gary DeMar, and other Christian leaders.

Tentative Workshop Schedule

Our 2012 Keynote is Mark Hamby is founder and President of Lamplighter Publishing and Lamplighter Theatre He lives in Northeastern Pennsylvania with his wife, Debbie. They raised 3 children who were homeschooled and though they live in various parts of the US, Mark finds that he is more involved in his children’s lives than ever before.

As an author, speaker, and Bible teacher, what Mark Hamby enjoys most is helping his audience to remove the mask in order to expose the heart. Unless the heart is reached, there can be no lasting change. Through the genre of storytelling and the life-changing power of God’s Word, Mark’s audiences have learned that the God of all grace is willing and able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask or think.

New for this year are the Men’s Track Workshops geared specifically for dads. These workshops will be covering topics such as leadership, being the family principal, prayer and teaching your children. We also have a wonderful line up of Ladies’ Track Workshops giving practical how-to’s and encouragement for women. Vendor favorites will be back along with new vendor workshops designed to inspire.

We will be finalizing our schedule in the next few days,  but until then, please feel free to look at our Conference Workshop Overview – Tentative Schedule.

We are a family-owned and operated business. Our six children are all homeschooled and we love it. Homeschooling  is a great family-building adventure and so is running a family business. We have been serving homeschoolers for over ten years and we are here to serve you, too. Regardless if you are just getting started or if you are a seasoned homeschooler, we would love to get to know you and to help you the best we can. Some More About Homeschool Hangout -

We select the products that we carry carefully. It’s a matter of conscience and responsibility before God for us to take this very seriously. We are not in this business primarily to make money, even though that is important to keep the doors open. We firmly believe that God has given us this opportunity to serve you for a greater purpose and that is to help you bring your children up in the truth and to gain knowledge and understanding that is a sure foundation for life. If we don’t believe in a book or curriculum, we won’t sell it.

Books are a great way to educate ourselves and our children. You can learn almost anything from a book, but it has to be a good book and it has to be truthful.

Our books and curricula (new and used) cover Kindergarten through 12th grade. However, we offer also a large selection of good reading books for young and old, all kinds of parent-help books as well Christian books that teach us the sure foundation of our Christian faith from a reformed perspective.

Education in the home should be enjoyable and productive. Besides the core subjects of Math, Science, Language Arts, and History, we seek to build godly character in our children by setting before them a godly example that they can imitate. Therefore, we as parents read good books, study, discuss, and learn with one another and in front of our children. Peggy and I are always studying something together and it is inspiring for our children. We have no TV, no game-boys etc. But we all have a computer for work  and for studying and, yes, to communicate. But the bookshelves in our house are the biggest thing. Nobody is ever bored with a good book in his hand. Come see us.

Welcome and Welcome Back!

Charleston Southern University will be at 2012 CHEC as well as our favorite teaching supply store Teach Right!
